Another illustration from Leninka: this one from a 1925 edition of Tikhonov’s short story “Vamberi,” written that same year. It’s based on the life of Vámbéry Ármin, a Hungarian- Jewish orientalist who managed to travel all throughout Central Asia in the early 1860s by disguising himself as a Sunni dervish named Reshit Efendi. Vamberi had a congenital disease that confined him to crutches. Luckily, he found the sun.
