katharineholt:

Head back behind the space monument at VDNkh and you enter a kind of netherworld. It’s more serene than the main drag of VDNKh, which has a carnivalesque quality (rides, games) as well as a series of monumental and majestic pavilions that are now mostly full of kiosks selling junk. (See photos 1-4,  which were taken in the summer of 2007, when I was at VDNKh the last time.)

In the netherworld of which I speak (see photos 6-10), all is more serene and more haunting in its disrepair. There are ponds, there is an abandoned “tasting pavilion” for food that looks like a confection in itself, there is a well-maintained and lovely botanical garden, there is a restaurant/paintball/fishing outfit, there is a pavilion devoted to seedlings, one devoted to honey, one devoted to eyeglasses.

(Thank you, Charles, for once again directing me to the good stuff.)
